Who We Are:  The Jewish Fund Teen Board was founded by The Jewish Fund to give Jewish high school students the opportunity to engage in and learn the responsibility of collective philanthropy. The Teen Board is proud to be a part of the Jewish Teen Funders’ Network Foundation Board Incubator, funded by Laura Lauder and the Maimonides Fund. This year, 33 students are participating in the Teen Board. These students have issued an RFP to focus on the funding priorities below. Funding decisions will be made by the students in the Teen Board program.

The Jewish Fund was established in 1997 from the sale proceeds of Sinai Hospital to the Detroit Medical Center. Sinai Hospital was a Jewish community funded facility that grew into one of metropolitan Detroit’s top health care institutions. As a legacy of Sinai Hospital, The Jewish Fund continues the tradition of assuring quality and compassionate care for those in need in Metropolitan Detroit.

Mission Statement:  As The Jewish Fund Teen Board, we are a group of teens that strive to address community needs in Metro Detroit affecting youth and families. Our mission is to effect change in the following areas:

  1. Through support of mental health awareness initiatives, individuals in our community will experience improved mental health.*
  2. Through projects which provide support and assistance to individuals with special needs and/or their families, participants will experience better quality of life and access to community participation.

*Note: The Teen Board has a special interest in projects that address adolescent mental health, although projects targeting adults or other age demographics are also welcome.

Applying to The Jewish Fund Teen Board:  We encourage you to call to discuss your proposed project with our staff before applying for a grant. In addition to being sure your organization’s project is a good fit with the mission of the Fund and meets its criteria, we have found that these conversations may be helpful in strengthening the proposed project and the development of the letter of intent. Funds Available to Grant:  Up to $50,000 for this Request for Proposals cycle. The recommended range for requests is $5,000-$20,000.


  • All applications must be received by 5:00 PM on Tuesday, January 17, 2017 through The Jewish Fund Teen Board’s online grant application system
  • Late or incomplete proposals will not be considered.
  • All Applicants, regardless of whether their request is granted, will be notified by mid-May, 2017, of the Board’s decisions.


  • The Jewish Fund will make grants to 501©(3) organizations and other non-profits qualified as tax exempt under the Internal Revenue Code. Applicant organizations must provide a current audited financial statement with management letter.
  • All requests should address one of the focus areas in the 2016-2017 Teen Board Mission Statement.
  • Additionally, all grants made by the Teen Board must satisfy the grantmaking guidelines of The Jewish Fund. Therefore, all grant proposals should also fall into one or more of the following areas:
    • Health and Welfare of the Jewish Community
    • Health of the Metropolitan Detroit Community
    • Enhancing the Historic Bond between the Jewish Community and Detroit
      Grant requests may support current programs as well as new activities.
  • The Teen Board will accept proposals from organizations serving the Metro Detroit community. Organizations with a broader geographic focus may apply; however, the proposal must address its relevance to people living within our local geographic area.
  • Organizations with a pending grant request to The Jewish Fund may also apply for this grant program. Organizations may only submit one application in response to this request for proposals.
  • In cases where two or more organizations are partnering on a program or project, one organization should submit a single proposal on behalf of the partnership.
  • Organizations selected for final reviews must agree to arrange for a site visit by the Teen Board.
  • Site Visits will be scheduled during after school hours (Tentatively between 3:00-7:00 PM) during the dates of March 8 & 9 and March 13-16, 2017.

Funding Details:

  • The Teen Board will make one-year grants.
  • Funds should be expended between June 2017 and May 2018.
  • Funds may not be used for any other project or for other organizational operating expenses.
  • Any unused funds shall be returned to The Jewish Fund Teen Board at the end of the fiscal year.
  • Any prospective changes to the project grant must be discussed with Teen Board staff prior to any changes being made from the application as submitted.
  • If a grant is awarded, you will be asked to sign a Grant Agreement Letter, which specifies all of the conditions associated with the grant.
  • One year grants require a six-month progress report and a final report following the conclusion of the grant term.
